You're at the table, the bill has arrived, and nobody wants to install an app and make an account before the coffee gets cold.
So Dutch doesn't have accounts. Show your group's QR code, everyone scans it, and they're in — with the full app, on the free tier, forever. Joining someone else's group is always free and always unlimited.
Every group also gets a short word sequence like green-moon-tea, so two people can check they've landed in the same place.
Enough to settle a two-week trip for six people. Not much more than that.
Not just a running total — the shortest list of payments that squares everybody up. Mark one paid and the balances clear.
Paid in yen on a trip priced in euros? Enter the rate you actually got. It converts once, so the balance never drifts afterwards.

Dutch has no backend. There is no server that holds your expenses, no account to create, and no analytics of any kind. Your groups live in your iCloud, and sharing a group is Apple's own CloudKit sharing — the same mechanism as a shared photo album.
That isn't a policy that could change next quarter. There is nowhere for the data to go, because the infrastructure to collect it was never built.
Everything in Dutch works on the free tier — every feature, no ads, no trial. The one limit is that you can create one group at a time. Groups you join don't count, so scanning a friend's code is always free however many times you do it.
If you're the one starting the trips, a single purchase lifts the limit for good. One payment, not a subscription, shared with your Family Sharing group.
The source is open under MPL 2.0 — build it yourself and the limit isn't there at all. What the App Store version buys you is not having to.
